Soon after I retired from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, we were told that all my precious Lhasa Apsos would be dead in less than a year. They were all diagnosed with calcium oxalate kidney stones, and these stones affected both kidneys in each dog, and were, essentially, 'wall-to-wall'. The vets we consulted told us their kidneys would be fully calcified in under a year and that with calcium oxalate stones, there was nothing that could be done. We were told these stones never dissolve, and only proliferate in size and number.

These girls are like my children and I could not believe they were all dying. I poured over books and the internet. I met with M.D.s specializing in the treatment of this problem in humans, and I discovered that these stones are almost epidemic in humans and animals in this country.

It seemed that all I could do was to make their last months truly happy, and I determined I would cook for them and feed them only fresh, natural foods. In addition to that, I learned as much as I could about how these stones were addressed in humans, and I applied that information to the contents of their meals.

What happened next was something all our vets tell me had never happened before. First, they all seemed to get younger. Fuzzerbear, who was 15  years old at the time  had more energy and her coat grew markedly thicker, and she had a new 'spring in her step', as did all the girls'. And we had been needing to take at least one of them to the vet weekly for something or another for a few years. All of a sudden, the need for trips to the vet stopped. They were all getting healthier, stronger, happier, younger before our eyes, and this continued. We weren't the only ones who noticed that, either. Their vets remarked about it and were clearly impressed and pleasantly surprised. After seven months, we had the same large specialty veterinary hospital do repeat ultrasounds to compare to those performed those months before. Fuzzerbear's U/S showed no stones whatsoever in one kidney and 5 very small stones in the other. Molly McMouse' U/S showed the same thing. C.B. Wigglesworth's U/S showed her to be free of stones entirely.

The vets were impressed, but not convinced until they tried the  diet with other patients diagnosed with the same calcium oxalate kidney stones and in each dog, the stones disappeared, too. This is something no one had ever heard of happening. In fact, it had been believed it could not be done by both veterinarians and medical doctors alike.

Fuzzerbear went on to be with us until she was 19 years old.  Molly McMouse lived to the age of 18, and C.B. Wigglesworth is now 17, and remains free of calcium oxalate stones. Additionally, the vets continue to use the diet for the benefit of their other patients with these stones, which are apparently quite prevalent. I am also contacted constantly by others whose dogs suffer from these stones, including other veterinarians who have heard of it.
